ABOUT PETRINA OLIVE OIL

The village of Petrina is situated at the foot of the Taygetos mountains. The 500 inhabitants gain their living mainly by cultivating olives. Over 275.ooo litres of olive oil of the very best quality are pressed anually.
Owing to school teacher Stylianos Koutoupis’ perspicacity, the idea of a cooperative society came into being in 1907. By 1915 the society was founded and named „AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE PETRINA“, being the first agricultural co-operative in Greece.
Until today their procedure of pressing olive oil has stayed unique. The Petrina farmers’ idea is joint pressing of all olives from admission to the press.
Elsewhere the farmers always insist on pressing the oil from their own crop. In Petrina, however, the partners follow a new path. Immediately after weighing, the olives are pressed commonly in a single running process.
The amount of pressed olive oil is finally divided among all associates (all members are in fact owners of the cooperative) in relation to the olive weight supplied from each farmer.
This procedure hardly shows any disadvantage for the individual farmer, has, however, important advantages, particularly regarding the quality of the olive oil.
Gdr. 160.000.000 have been invested from 1996 on – improving the production process considerably. The high quality standard is being proved by the multiple awards that Petrina olive oil has gained at Thessaloniki international fairs.
This pure ‘Koroneiki’ variety olive oil is of outstanding quality.
Only two olive oils all over Laconia have been registered and protected as brands with the E.C. One of them is the “extra native olive oil of Petrina”.
